What is Word Hunt?
Word Hunt is a fast word-finding game played on a grid of letters. You trace a path from one tile to a neighboring tile — in any of the eight directions, including diagonals — to spell a word, without reusing a tile within that word. Words must be at least three letters and real dictionary words. You have 80 seconds to find as many as you can, and longer words are worth dramatically more points than short ones.
Word Hunt is best known as one of the games in GamePigeon, the iMessage game pack — but that version only runs on Apple devices. The Word Hunt Game is an independent, free web edition of the same idea, built to play in any browser on any device. Read more on the GamePigeon Word Hunt page.
How scoring works
Points depend only on how long a word is, so hunting long words is always the fastest route to a high score:
| Word length | Points |
|---|---|
| 3 letters | 100 |
| 4 letters | 400 |
| 5 letters | 800 |
| 6 letters | 1,400 |
| 7 letters | 1,800 |
| 8 letters | 2,200 |
| 9+ letters | 2,600 + 400 per extra letter |
How to play in four steps
- Tap Start. The board is hidden until you start, so no one can study the letters early. The 80-second timer begins the moment you tap.
- Trace a word. Press and drag across neighboring tiles — including diagonals — to spell a word of three or more letters, never reusing a tile.
- Release to score. Lift your finger to submit. Valid new words light up and add to your score; longer words are worth far more.
- Beat the clock. Keep finding words until time runs out, then review your score, your best word, and the words you missed.
Simple to learn, tricky to master. For a deeper dive and scoring strategy, read the how to play guide and the strategy guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is Word Hunt?
Word Hunt is a fast word-finding game played on a grid of letters. You trace paths between neighboring tiles — including diagonals — to spell as many valid words as you can before an 80-second timer runs out. Longer words are worth far more points, so a single six- or seven-letter find can outscore a dozen short ones.
How do you play Word Hunt?
Press and drag across connected tiles to spell a word, moving to any of the eight neighboring tiles and never reusing a tile within the same word. Release to submit. Words must be at least three letters and appear in the dictionary. Every valid new word adds to your score; the round ends when the timer hits zero.
Is the Word Hunt Game free to play?
Yes. Every board here is completely free, with no app to install and no account required. Play as many rounds as you like in your browser on phone, tablet, or desktop — and if you want to appear on the daily leaderboard, you can optionally sign in.
Is this GamePigeon's Word Hunt?
No. GamePigeon's Word Hunt is an iMessage game that only runs on Apple devices. This is an independent, free web version of the same idea that anyone can play in a browser on Android, Windows, or desktop. We are not affiliated with GamePigeon or its developer.
How does scoring work?
Points depend only on word length: a 3-letter word scores 100, a 4-letter word 400, a 5-letter word 800, a 6-letter word 1,400, a 7-letter word 1,800, an 8-letter word 2,200, and each letter beyond eight adds 400 more. Finding long words is always the fastest way to a high score.
Does my progress save?
Yes. Your daily results, your best scores, and your solving streak are saved locally in your browser, so clearing your browser data resets them. If you sign in, your streak and stats also sync to your account so they follow you across devices.
What board shapes can I play?
Every day offers four boards: the classic 4×4 square, a larger 5×5, a hollow donut, and an X-shaped cross. Each shape changes which tiles are adjacent, so the same letters play very differently from one board to the next.
